Burnout In Healthcare

As of 2021 more than 60% of healthcare workers are burnt out.  Employees need choice, flexibility, and safe spaces to recharge.

A recent study showed that most healthcare workers find sanctuary in the Restroom.  This was due to privacy and location/accessibility.  Participants in the study said that the Staff Break Room was often located too far away from where they worked, so more times than not they opted to skip their break.

Interruptions were cited as the number one stressor experienced by healthcare employees.  These interruptions came from administrators, peers, patients, and patients’ family members.  These stressors stem from operational issues; however, we can address these issues in the built environment through strategic space planning and thoughtful furniture selection.

Individuals experience a decrease in stress when they perceive an increase in choice and control.  By designing spaces with centrally located break rooms, transparent workspaces, and private areas of refuge, we can reduce stress and fight burnout.
